The Metro South Chamber of Commerce urges the Brockton City Council to support the inclusion of a “Rocky Marciano State/Park” placard on the existing state highway route 24 “ATTRACTION” signs at exit 17.
The wonderful statue of the American athletic superstar, Rocky Marciano, represents so much to so many throughout the world. His name is synonymous with the “American Dream”. His story is universally understood by so many who have worked to better themselves by overcoming obstacles. Rocky further distinguished himself by remembering where he came from and acknowledging the root of his success, Brockton, Massachusetts. The World Boxing Council, for these reasons, commissioned a beautiful twenty-two foot sculpture of Rocky Marciano and presented it to the people of Massachusetts. The unveiling of the statue at Champions Park drew thousands of people and garnered international media attention. It stands the tallest monument to a professional sports figure in North America.
By all measures, this monument is an attraction. A simple placard on an existing highway sign, it would seem, is the least we can do to help people find their way to this remarkable statue of an exceptional person who is an inspiration to many.
