On June 12, 2025, the Metro South Chamber of Commerce and Eastern Bank held the 27th Annual ATHENA Leadership Award Luncheon at Massasoit Community College in Brockton. The event recognized extraordinary leadership and community impact, featuring guest speaker Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll.

The luncheon celebrated this year’s ATHENA awardee, Jeni Mather – founder and president of JM Pet Resort + Veterinary Clinic. Mather was honored for her lifelong dedication to professional excellence, mentorship, and community service.

Lt. Gov. Driscoll delivered a compelling keynote address that underscored the critical role women play in business and the community. She applauded Mather’s leadership, noting how her passion for animals transformed a pet care business into a woman‑led enterprise with nearly 120 employees – many of whom have advanced into leadership roles under her mentorship.

During the program, attendees learned about the ATHENA Awardís origins and mission. Based on the Greek goddess Athena, it celebrates individuals who excel in their careers, uplift others (especially women), and enrich their communities. Since its start in 1982, over 8,000 leaders in 500+ communities globally have been honored.

Jeni Mather’s exceptional journey captured the spirit of the award. After earning her biology degree at Stonehill College, she launched South Shore’s first motivational dog‑training and daycare program in 1998. Her trademarked PLAYtrain® system, along with a full‑service veterinary clinic, grooming spa, and luxury boarding, set new standards in pet care. Beyond business success, she founded Blue Dog Shelter, placed over 1,800 dogs in loving homes, and raised more than $500,000 during its operation.

A pillar in the local community, Mather shaped industry standards as a founding member of the Ollieís Law Coalition and currently serves as Chair of its advisory committee within the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources. She is one of only 75 Certified Professional Animal Care Operators (CPACO) in the nation and regularly advises legal authorities and municipalities on animal welfare and boarding regulations.

Guests praised the sold‑out event’s atmosphere of celebration and inspiration. In her acceptance remarks, Jeni highlighted the importance of culture and mentorship. She said she felt most proud “bringing out the best in others,” creating a workplace where mothers, caretakers, and young professionals can grow and flourish. Her vision reflects the ATHENA values: to live authentically, foster collaboration, act courageously, and give back.

The event reaffirmed the Metro South Chamber’s commitment to supporting leadership and promoting women in business. Sponsors like Eastern Bank, MassHire Greater Brockton Workforce Board, and Massasoit Community College played a key role in making the day a success.

All attendees left energized – celebrating a trailblazer whose courage, compassion, and commitment to others exemplify the ATHENA mission. The 27th Annual ATHENA Leadership Award Luncheon offered a powerful reminder: when women lead, communities thrive.
