A doctor who grew up in Brockton has come home to open an urgent care clinic.
Dr. Imran Hasan is founder and lead doctor for American Family Care’s new location at the Westgate Mall near Staples. Urgent care clinics treat ailments that aren’t immediately life-threatening. They also offer physicals, X-rays and lab tests. You don’t need an appointment.
American Family Care’s Brockton location opened on Aug. 27. The clinic will initially be staffed with two full-time medical providers, three medical assistants and an X-ray technician, supplemented with four part-time providers and four part-time medical assistants, Hasan said.
Hasan specializes in internal medicine. He’s an assistant professor of medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School and an adjunct assistant professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine.

A ‘great model’ off care
Earlier in his career, Hasan moonlighted with an urgent care company that was later bought by American Family Care. That experience stuck with him. “Hey, that was a great model,” he recalls thinking.
“It was very efficient care, and people were seen and treated well and were in and out. [You’re] left feeling you’ve really made an impact on a lot of people’s lives quickly and efficiently,” Hasan said.
Patients may be able to see a doctor more quickly at urgent care clinics than hospital emergency departments where waits can stretch past 12 hours. “It’s just an easier resource for a busy mom with two kids,” Hasan said, giving one example of patients who might benefit.
The clinic has five exam rooms with machines that take vitals automatically, Hasan said. They can do X-rays and many lab tests on-site.
Hasan said he chose the location in part because the Market Basket across the parking lot stays busy day and night. He expects to see about 20 patients a day in the beginning. The clinic is set up to treat up to 100 visitors a day. The Stonehill College football team is already signed up as a client for physicals.

Grew up in Brockton
Hasan grew up West Elm Terrace, attending Hancock Elementary and West Middle School. He delivered The Enterprise and caddied at Thorny Lea Golf Club. His Brockton bona fides include carpooling to Boston College High School with Mayor Jack Yunits‘ sons.

Brockton is health care hub for region
Christopher Cooney knows the local job market inside and out as president and CEO of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. He said the region’s top industry cluster is health care. “When anyone within a 30-40 mile radius gets sick, they come to Brockton for health care,” Cooney said during a tour of the 500 Westgate Drive clinic.
The urgent care clinic may take pressure off the emergency departments at Brockton Hospital and Boston Medical Center – South.
“They fill a niche for that emergency situation where otherwise a person who needs help right away would end up driving themselves to the emergency room,” Cooney said.
Cooney said it’s great to have Hasan back in Brockton, saying he’s a “local kid doing well and doing good for the community.”

American Family Care is nation’s largest urgent care chain
American Family Care is a nationwide chain of urgent care centers. It’s the largest single network of such clinics, with 403 locations according to a June report by the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine. The website of the Birmingham, Alabama, company, says it has locations in 29 states. Last year, the investment firm Lorient Capital bought an equity stake in the company with a view to expanding its operations. Private equity plays a large but controversial role in U.S. health care. Supporters say private equity spurs innovation while detractors point to meltdowns like the bankruptcy of Steward Health Care, the former owner of Brockton’s Good Samaritan Medical Center. That hospital is now owned by Boston Medical Center, which is organized as a nonprofit, and has been renamed Boston Medical Center – South.
